The Gift of Reading

Kenny and the Dragon

Dear East Noble Family,

As we prepare for summer break, The Kendallville Rotary Club would like to give each family the gift of reading.  This week, each family will be receiving a copy of “Kenny and the Dragon.” This book will be coming home with the youngest student in your family. We are asking that families will read and enjoy this book at home, together as a family.

Reading aloud at home is valuable because it prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. By distributing this book to all families with elementary aged students, we aim to build a community of readers. The One School, One Book program is a novel idea in that children of all grade levels will all be listening to their parents read the same book.  Strange or daring as it may seem, it makes sound educational sense.  Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond your child’s own reading level.  We also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves.  This book was selected as a title that can be followed, understood, and enjoyed by younger students, but will still captivate and stimulate older children.

We know that you’ll enjoy this special reading time with your children. Please refer to the additional resources below… to supplement the reading of “Kenny and the Dragon.” Documents include; a reading schedule (to follow if you choose), suggested activities, as well as tips to help your child develop a love of reading.
